LED growing bulbs are becoming extremely popular for several reasons. They are safer than high pressure sodium lights and other fluorescent and incandescent lights because they do not get to the extremely hot temperatures that those lights do and unlike those lights they have no chance of accidentally bursting or exploding when the bulbs blow. Also you never have to change the bulbs.
Furthermore, an LED grow light is better for the environment and cheaper because it takes much less power to run one. An LED light operates 50 to 90 percent more efficiently than incandescent and fluorescent high pressure tube lights. In the long run, these lights will save you a lot of money, especially if you are using several for indoor growing.
While LED grow lights do save you significantly in the long term outlook on bulbs and electricity, they can be rather expensive to buy. You can get very cheap LED grow panels for as little as $50 but they are quite weak and will only come in one color which is not ideal for plant growth. These small lights are only suited for small plants which you do not expect to have high yields. For better results you will want a more powerful light with red and blue light. The reason to have more than one color is because the process of photosynthesis requires light from across the light spectrum to work at its best. The specific light type and wavelength that works best is different for each plant so you will want to research before you invest in a light.
These top of line lights cost at least several hundred dollars starting at around $400. Depending on how many plants you are growing and how big they are you may need several panels. It is recommended that you have one 12” by 12” panel per 8.6 square feet of coverage you need. This can also change with the distance you plan to set the light from the plants. A large setup could easily cost over $1000 but in a few years you save enough on bulbs and electricity for it to be worth it.
