Different types of chainsaw trousers

August 18th, 2010

If you own a chainsaw, you hopefully also own protective clothing to wear while you work. Chainsaws are great, but they can be dangerous. If you’ve never used one before, or are not confident, the best advice to take is to attend a chainsaw safety training course, where you can learn one on one with an instructor.

One of the most basic pieces of protective clothing is a pair of chainsaw trousers. Chainsaws trousers can be an apron type construction (you simply buckle these on over your own trousers) or they can be designed as a full pull over pant. They are typically constructed of a very tough fibrous material, often Kevlar or similar fibre, as used in the construction of bullet-proof vests. The concept behind chainsaw safety trousers is that, should the saw unexpectedly cut through a branch or trunk, and cut into your legs, the tough fibres in the chainsaw trousers will be torn out, and will almost instantly jam the chainsaw chain, preventing it from cutting further.

Chainsaw trousers are very effective, as anybody who has seen them in action will testify.

Apron style trousers are usually cheaper, and a more convenient if you only plan to do a limited amount of cutting. They are faster to put on, requiring only one or two buckles per leg to fasten them. These are ideal choice for the home handyman, or people who are simply going to do a small amount wood cutting in their spare time.

Full pull on chainsaw pants are the choice of professional people who spend a lot of time working outdoors. These trousers are more expensive, but also offer much better protection. Apron style pants generally only cover the front portion of the legs, while these trousers are going to cover you from all sides. Another advantage of these trousers is that they also protect you from the elements, keeping the warm, and even offering additional protection from thorny vegetation and threats such as snakebite.

Whichever description fits you better, don’t be tempted to work without the appropriate safety equipment. Chainsaw trousers may be considered a single use item (once they have been severely cut they usually need replacing) but they are essential and can save you from severe injuries.

A chainsaw as part of a survival tool kit

August 17th, 2010

There are many people in society who believe in something bad is going to happen, some sooner than others. By something bad, we mean a catastrophe – maybe a natural disaster like a tornado, Cyclone, or wildfire, or maybe even an extensive terrorist attack or widespread civil unrest. To varying degrees, these people prepare for the worst. Some people stockpile food and water, some who will go as far as to stockpile weapons, fuel, and provisions to last them for many years in the case of a widespread emergency.

People who prepare for disasters in this way are often dubbed survivalists, and all subscribe to a motto which was made famous by Baden Powell, founder of the International Scout movement: be prepared.

Being prepared can mean different things to different people. To someone living in the inner city suburb, being prepared for a disaster might mean storing two or three cartons of bottled water and some cans of baked beans and matches in the cupboard. To somebody who lives in the country, being prepared might mean stockpiling extra ammunition, and extra fuel to run machinery. Although the survivalist movement might seem silly to some people, consider the following:

How well-equipped would YOU have been in the face of a major flood, storm, or power outage? I don’t need to give examples, because everyone can remember at least several notable ones that occurred in the United States in the last four years. Would he have been ready to deal with a disaster like the, where there was no power, gas, or emergency service crew to specifically come to your personal aide?

Survival tool kits can contain many different things apart from just food and water and the provision of shelter. Some basic tools, such as those that you might use to repair your car in an emergency, or shut off gas and water, are also an essential part of being prepared for anything. Here is something you may not have considered though: a small petrol chainsaw can be a fantastic addition to any survivalists toolkit.

If you’ve never used a chainsaw before, you probably are not familiar with incredible power that these tools deliver. Even a small petrol chainsaw, you can quickly it all is, walls or cut through fallen trees and tree branches. Just imagine, that you’ve got your family and your whole survival kit loaded into your vehicle, and are on your way out of the city. Everything is going well, until you come across a tree that has fallen across the roadway. You can’t go around it, you can’t go over it the only thing you can do is cut through it. Even with a small petrol chainsaw this will take no more than a couple of minutes. As you can see, a chainsaw can really save the day.

To many people, this advice might seem silly, or simply over the top. But if you believe in being prepared for any emergency, and being able to help yourself, your family, and your neighbours, you need to seriously consider whether a chainsaw might make a crucial addition to your survival kit.
