Enhancing a Garden with Lantern Lights

August 5th, 2010

Gardens are a place of peace and tranquility and often require great care to keep healthy. The wide assortments of plants in a garden are frequently accompanied by various outdoor structures like fountains and ponds. Did you also know that there are special lights available for use in gardens? You may wonder why lights would be needed in the bright and beautiful canvas that is a garden. Well, some people like to walk through or sit in their garden at night. To do this properly and to enjoy the sights, lights are a must. The light generated by backyard porch fixtures and other standard outdoor lights simply is not enough to cover a garden.

Setting up an all-encompassing garden lighting system may sound daunting, but you do not need that many lights to achieve a powerful effect. Start by looking over the main features of your garden to determine which objects you want to accent. One powerful accent light is known as a lantern. These are not the kind of lanterns used at campsites, but instead have a decorative exterior more reminiscent of a classical era. Lantern lights have a hook on top which they can be hung from. To add light directly within a garden, users can stick Sheppard’s hooks into the ground. These hooks are tall metal stakes which have a large loop at the top.

Lantern lights can use either light bulbs or candles for power. Candle powered lanterns are have a more realistic glow but can be more of a hassle to maintain. Electric models have LED bulbs which simulate candlelight by filtering it through colored glass or plastic. Most lanterns have light panels on all sides, projecting light into all directions. Conventional lanterns cast yellow light, while exotic ones have colors like blue or green.
