Hot Flashes and Night Sweats

July 30th, 2010

If you are experiencing hot flashes and night sweats, and your condition is severe enough to make you seek treatment, you should know that there are many treatment options available to you. That is true if you look for alternatives outside of those offered by conventional medicine, which is basically limited to HRT, or Hormone Replacement Therapy. In HRT, doctors attempt to raise levels of estrogen in the body through the use of drugs. It is hoped that this will decrease levels of FSH and LH, the hormones thought to be responsible for causing the hot flashes, as levels of these hormones in the body are thought to rise in response to the falling levels of estrogen in women approaching menopause.

This theory probably has at least some validity, even if the exact causes of hot flashes and night sweats are still unknown. However, HRT presents risks which may not be necessary to take, as there are safer, natural ways to deal with the condition.
One of the most effective ways can actually start right at home. This involves some lifestyle and habit changes and so takes more will power than simply popping a pill, however. You can start by making a point of avoiding goods which can trigger hot flashes and night sweats. These include spicy foods, white sugar, hot drinks, and intoxicants ranging from coffee to alcohol to cigarettes.

Exercising just three times a week for 20 minutes can be effective in increasing endorphin levels, which drop during hot flashes. At the same time, it decrease FSH and LH levels, which is exactly what you want for preventing or lessening the severity of hot flashes.
If you’ve tried these courses to no avail or don’t have the willpower to stick with such changes, or if you’d just like to attack the problem from all angles, herbal remedies may be extremely effective course that will work. Ideally, you want to consult an herbalist or someone else skilled in herbal healing as there are many choices of herbs and some have contraindications.
