While there are some careers and professions that ask for a simple expertise or two, CAD drafters are required to perform exceptionally well in several different categories that are completely opposite of each other. Communication is an absolute must to make it in this profession because drafters must be able to check other drafter’s projects critiquing them if they need it as well as taking any advice that could ultimately make the work being created better.

Furthermore, an even more important part of the communication aspect is working directly with engineering teams where they must be able to take direction from them to generate two- or three- dimensional models. Those with CAD drafting jobs must participate in meetings and also do work with production and manufacturing personnel to make sure that the drafting going through is high quality.

Being able to work as a team is just as much of a requirement as the ability to make excellent drafts. Teaming up with engineers, designers and other drafters can be a difficult task because everyone must come together and share their ideas, but those who love working with a team and are open to other perspectives and opinions will excel in this category and often create the best work because it will share the vision of the entire team and not just the drafter themselves.

In addition to the hectic projects that must be completed and deadlines met, CAD drafters must keep up with working knowledge in the industry as well as being able to apply industry specific drafting codes and standards which is not easy at all. Although some people learn very quickly, combining that with all of the other tasks that are required can be overwhelming sometimes and this is where being able to handle stress in a calm manner is very beneficial. Overall, CAD drafters are professionals that can make a great salary but at the same time are asked to perform many different tasks that collectively is no walk in the park.
