The Time to Prepare for a Disaster is Now

August 3rd, 2010

This is a very important topic that should concern everyone. All people should live by the Scouting motto “Be Prepared”. We live in a era where a disaster does occur more often than people realize. When your at home the majority of us have a first aid kit to take care of minor incidents that may happen. It is also very important to have one in all your vehicles as well. Yet, many people do not think of the “what if” should occur.

The idea of having an emergency, or survival backpack handy will ease your mind if you find yourself in a situation that is beyond your control. Whether you are at home or on the road being prepared for a disaster may not only save your life, yet the life of someone else. No one ever knows how or when a disaster will strike in most cases. For example, a weather disaster is somewhat predictable by a meteorologists who monitors the weather twenty four hours a day all year long. The saying “you can’t control mother nature” is very true. The density of a weather disaster is still anyone’s best guess. Natural and intentional disasters can happen at any time, any where so why not be prepared.

One of the simplest ways to be prepared for a any disaster, is to think of it as planning for a three day camping trip. You should have at least one change of clothing for every member of the family.

A good idea would be to have them in air tight plastic bags. Having an emergency blanket, or a sleeping bag is a necessary item. Make sure you have enough non-perishable food as well as bottled water for everyone. If, you have pets with you make sure you have supplies for them as well. A radio that is also equipped with picking up the NOAA weather channel, which can be found at most major sporting goods stores. You should have enough flashlights for each person, and extra batteries. In your first aid kit you should include a three day supply of any prescribed medication. Many people have emergency roadside kits in their vehicles, but if you don’t you can make your own. They usually include some basic tools, a reflective roadside marker, a flare, and jumper cables. You should include a whistle and up to date road maps in your travel kit. What may seem to be allot to have ready or with you at all times, may be the difference between life and death.
