Movie ticket: $8.00. Popcorn and a drink: $10.00. Having the same experience you have in a theater right in your home: priceless. With today’s technology, it is not very hard to have a movie theater experience right inside your house. Here are some of the very basics for a theater in your house.

It is very common before movies start or on the bottom of the screen when a television show pops on a 5.1 compatible message. This means that the show you are viewing can be heard in surround sound in whatever room it is installed. For sound systems the first number refers to the number of speakers. Typical set ups have three in the front, and two in the rear. The second number is the number of subwoofers the system has. Typical living room setups only require a 5.1. Large stadiums, music halls, and other public places often require a much larger amount of both.

You got the sound, now for the picture. The purpose of a home theater is, of course, to emulate the experience you have in a real theater. This cannot be done without the use of a television. The obvious problem is deciding which one to get. In general, if you are looking to go larger than 42” you want to pick up a plasma TV on a budget, but a LCD if you have money to spend. LCDs are fine for any TV below the 42” mark. There are other various differences that the buyer will have to look at him or herself, it is really just a matter of preference. As an aside, smaller LCD screens actually have better quality than larger ones – and while you wouldn’t want a 15 inch LCD or similar for home theater, these smaller screens can provide a great second TV in another room of the house.

Once you combine sight and sound, just put your couch in the middle of the room and enjoy the full experience of a home theater. Forget spending money on movie tickets, you brought the cinema experience to your doorstep.
