First:  Pick a place on the globe, anywhere you choose will be point “A”.  Try to select a place you’ve never heard of, has the type of climate you long for, and is stable politically.  (Just in case you turn your dreams into reality!)

Second:  Pick a date to travel within the next year.  Determine how long you’ll travel for, and if this is a sole destination or part of a larger plan.  Count the number of days between today’s date and your departure date.  Extra points for single digit travel gaps!

Fourth:  Travel with as close to nothing as possible…  No matter how long the trip, just take a small backpack which is carryon size….  As your clothes wear out, simply replace them.  Before long you’ll be looking like a native!  Also, try to think of something that is unique to your part of the country that you could share with others…  I once made a BFF in Norway just by sharing a small jar of peanut butter – such a common item here, rare there!  So go ahead and pack a small bag for the fun of it.

Fifth:  Purchase a travel guide, try the Harvard students guide “Let’s Go” for the very best experience.  Just to be practical, since these books can be huge, buy a 2 gallon ziplock bag to keep the book fresh.  Curious?  Bring a small stapler and some staples.  Carefully remove the front and back cover from the book, and page by page tear them out of the book.  Staple together the sections you will use, and pass along the other sections to fellow travellers you meet on the road.  Your goal is to travel to all the areas you want to, and as you leave a country, pass along the section of the book to someone you meet on the road.  (Rules of the Travelosity travel game!)
