3 Outdoor Furniture Trends for Spring 2012

December 19th, 2011

With winter setting in, your outdoor living space probably isn’t getting much use. But instead of forgetting about it, use this time to plan for the future – spring will be here before you know it! The hallmark of a great outdoor room is great furniture, and that’s what we’re going to help you with today. Here are 3 outdoor furniture trends for 2012 to put you ahead of the curve.

Return of Wicker

Years ago, wicker weave was one of the most popular designs for patio furniture. More modern designs came along and replaced it, but it’s poised for a big comeback in 2012. Instead of wood, manufacturers are opting for lightweight resin, which gives it superior durability and makes maintenance minimal. They’re also going with a larger weave than that of years past, making the design stand out more.

Going Green

From shopping bags to appliances, it seems there’s a green version of everything these days. And that’s certainly the case with outdoor furniture, where items made from recycled materials will be having their breakout season next spring. Up to now, only a handful of manufactures have offered green products, but many are adding them to their lines for 2012. With these high grade plastic designs being able to withstand all sorts of weather conditions, they’re an investment you can feel good about putting on your patio.

Fire Pit Tables

Fire pits have been on the rise for a few years now, popping up everywhere from downtown night clubs to city parks. Like green items, we expect their popularity only to continue to climb next year. The designs of fire pit tables are becoming more decorative and functional, offering different shapes, materials, and extra features like center coverings to convert to a full table. While it may seem more like a fall/winter item, a fire is a great way to relax in the evening any time of year, and we expect seven more consumers to experience this for themselves this coming spring.

With winter here, it’s the perfect time to start planning the upgrades to your outdoor living space that you’ll make next spring. Keep these 3 trends in mind and you’ll create an outdoor room that everyone will fall in love with!

Egged on by Easter

May 10th, 2011

After a hectic Easter weekend and many bank holidays in April the chocolate-fuelled school holiday madness and the arrival of a deputation of relatives is now almost a distant memory. Having just about recovered from bonnet-making and cake baking for PTA activities I am now turning my mind to the how we managed to feed and find somewhere to sleep everyone – I must be more prepared next year.

If you are in the same hell as I was, all family, friends and their children descending on you – I actually think it is worse than Christmas from an organisational point of view – then my heart goes out to you. All I can say is add a few nice bottles of wine to the supermarket trolley in order to soften the blow!

When every one of your sofa beds is full and your freezer overflows you know that you just have to batten down the hatches and ride the wave through to next term. At least the weather is more Spring-like and there is a lot of joy to be had from a traditional Easter egg hunt – it is not all bad really.

I always think there is safety in numbers, and from conversation with friends I realise that I am definitely not on my own. All that effort for the family at Easter is well worth it and very much appreciated and when the last of the food is eaten and the last of the visitors have gone we can all be proud of ourselves. We were all looking forward to falling into our double beds happy in the knowledge that everyone had a wonderful time and we had consumed a weeks worth of calories in about half a day. Time to hit the gym!

Tips for Buying an Ergonomic Office Chair

December 7th, 2010

There are a number of advantages to buying an ergonomic office chair in terms of your health and productivity. These chairs are carefully designed to improve your posture and provide excellent support to your spine. This means you’ll have fewer aches and pains after sitting in one for long hours each day. However, there are many styles and makes of these chairs on the market, and you might find it difficult to choose one that works for you. Here are some tips for buying an ergonomic chair that should help you make the right decision.

When you start shopping, take a look at the top of the line chairs first, even if you can’t really afford one. These chairs are loaded with features, and will give you a good idea of the features that are available and which ones are important to you. For example, the Aeron chair has breathable mesh fabric as opposed to the traditional padded upholstery, and many people find this to help them stay cool and comfortable throughout their day. The Steelcase Leap chair has LiveBack technology that ingeniously molds itself to the shape of your back, creating the ultimate in comfort and support.

At a minimum, an ergonomic chair must have the following features:

* the ability to swivel
* a five point base
* the ability to adjust the seat height and angle
* an adjustable backrest, both for height and tilt
* adjustable armrests

Anything over and above this will only add to the support and comfort of your chair. It’s advisable that you buy the best chair you can afford, with as many adjustable features as possible, if you’re truly concerned about preventing chronic back problems and improving your productivity.

Be particularly wary about purchasing a cheap ergonomic office chair from an unknown manufacturer, because these chairs are sometimes poorly made and will start to deteriorate quickly. They also might not provide the support you need for optimal body alignment. It’s always a good idea to read a number of customer reviews before you make your choice.

The Right Console Table for Modern Decor

September 30th, 2010

Few homes fail to have the need for a console table, whether it is used to fill space in a stark hallway, add a focal point to a living room or family room wall, or hide the back of the sofa.  With today’s modern decor many immediately think of using a glass table.  The clear glass does not interrupt the visual open space in a room while allowing a focal point most notably by the ornaments placed on it.

However, when it comes to making the right selection for the modern decor should a solid glass console table be the choice or should the selection be a metal frame with a glass top?  The variations are almost endless when the selection involves glass.  For example, a solid glass table should only be used in well lit areas.  Otherwise it may not be seen until it has been bumped into, perhaps knocking over the adornments.

The most interesting modern console table may come with an curved aluminum base that looks like an “s” on its side with the glass top resting on the point and the curve of the resting “s”.  While looking ultra modern much is dependent on the other furniture in adjacent areas as to whether this table would work well in the decor.  If all the other selections are linear, depending on the sizes of the pieces, this could be the perfect table or it could be the worst choice imaginable.  It is quite important to remember that what is most interesting or appealing when set apart from the other decor, may clash with the existing furniture.

Other glass console tables with an updated contemporary look may have curved or straight metal legs and frame.  In some cases a wood frame would be just as appealing, providing the wood is finely cut and not too bulky in appearance.  When buying modern furniture, especially an accent piece such as the sofa table or the hallway table, it is always recommended that the buyer take along pictures of the furnished rooms surrounding the area where the new piece will be placed.  Or, take a picture of the piece one is considering and see if it looks appropriate once at home.

One must remember that “modern” is a wide spectrum.  The styles of modern furniture, including accent and occasional tables, is varied.  It is always best to consider the size, shape and style before making a purchase.  When purchasing a table with a glass top, it is recommended that the first consideration will be the placement.  A hallway may need a narrow table with a distinctive frame.  An entry may be complete with a solid glass table.

When shopping for a console table for the modern decor, there is much to consider.  Be sure to take pictures before buying.  If there is one thing about modern furniture and accessories, unlike many other styles, it either works well together or it doesn’t.  There is no in between.

Why You Should Get A Card Table

September 21st, 2010

There is a piece of furniture that’s specifically made for each room in your house. You wouldn’t have your sofa in your bedroom and you wouldn’t have your dining table in your living room right?. So therefore, if you play a lot of card games with your friends or if you have a game room, why not get a nice card table? Don’t think because it’s called a card table means you can’t use it for other purposes . There are many types of fun card games you can play such as poker, blackjack, etc. Listen, if they’re not using a card table, they’re still going to play cards on any table they find. Card tables are really multi-functional pieces of furniture can be used for a lot of things other than playing cards

Card Table Shapes And Sizes

Just like there are different shapes and sizes of sofas, beds, dining tables, etc., there are many different styles of card tables that you can buy. Finding the right type of table depends on how much you’re willing to spend and how much space you have inside your home. For those not having problems with space, you should consider getting an oval shaped card table. This is the best way card table in my opinion if you have your own game room.

Usually around 6-8 people can sit around a round card table. One of the benefits of owning a round card table is the ability to see everyone’s face unlike the oval shaped table. An octagon table; however, can seat up to 8 players only. Why? Because each edge of the table is presumed to have each player there . If your card games have fewer than 8 players on average, I would suggest getting a round table so people would be spread out evenly. There are also sets that you can buy matching card table and chairs.

The more affordable types of card tables are definitely the folding and table top versions. The two I just described will be a lot cheaper than getting a more permanent style like the pedestal tables.

Other Uses For A Card Table

As mentioned above, you don’t have to restrict using a card table for only playing cards. There tons of uses for a good table. A card table can be used for special events hosted at your place such as birthday parties, etc. A folding card table can be taken with you to the beach or park. These are some of the uses that a card table would be perfect for.

Oak Versus Cherry Writing Desks

September 17th, 2010

In the battle of oak versus cherry desks, the eye of the beholder reigns as the supreme judge.  Both oak and cherry desks are marvels of craftsmanship to behold.  If weighing the options of oak versus cherry desks, taking a step back to see what both these unique woods has to offer may make the decision easier to come to.

Oak is a prevalent hardwood in the United State, found largely in the eastern states from Texas all the way up to Maine.  There are 86 species of oak native to the United States, very few of which are used in furniture making.  Traditionally, white oak is the most commonly seen.  White oak as the name implies boasts a virtually pure white sapwood, while the heartwood is somewhat of a dark grey or brownish in color.  Oak wood is straight grained and open pored.  The open pores make it great for staining and the density of the wood holds screws and nails very well, which is part of the reason oak writing desks are so popular.

Cherry is another hardwood, less common than oak but not without merit.  Depending on the sawing process, cherry can boast some interesting grain patterning, generally described as straight grained.  The true appeal of cherry however is that it is incredibly versatile for wood working.  It is described as shock resistant, strong, and a moderately hard wood.  When finished, cherry has a smooth, satin-like feel.  Add this to its rich, reddish brown color and there is no misunderstanding that cherry is a choice wood for desks.

While solid oak or solid cherry desks are still the best available option for purists, they will be the most expensive option.  Much of the premium that is paid on wooden furniture comes in the price of the lumber itself.  From the seedling in the forest to the finished product with a price tag, each step in the production stage raises the price.  Much of the money spent especially in cherry wood is used in the practice of renewable forestry, and conservation is priceless.

Be advised as to the weight of the desk in question, and whether it’s conceivable to move said desk.  Cherry has a density between 26-33 lbs. per cubic foot while white oak has a density of over 44 lbs. per cubic foot.  Regardless of the determining factor in oak versus cherry desks be certain that either a solid oak or solid cherry desk is going to have some heft to it.

Consider Kitchen Stools Carefully

September 16th, 2010

Redecorating our home is a need for every homeowner at one point of another to ensure their house is always looking as beautiful as possible. This is a task that can be fun and exciting, but it also usually means spending quite a lot of money to get the look you desire. But contrary to popular belief, paying a fortune is not the only option if we want to beautify our home. In fact, some of the world’s greatest interior designers and furniture manufacturers have alternatives to the luxurious items that so many of us wish to purchase.

In the kitchen area there are so many considerations to make when trying to create the ideal space. One of the most loved pieces in this area is the kitchen stool that offers multiple functionalities.
In designing the look for your kitchen you need to be certain of the look you are trying to achieve and this includes the color, patterns and additional pieces to make a good finished product. That is why if you have kitchen stools the paint and the architectural design must harmonized well with all other things in the room.

However, if you are planning to purchase a kitchen stool there is a need for you to select wisely. So better yet decide on the materials for the stools whether it is made out of wood, plastic or metals.
The most convenient amongst the types are the plastic stools because it is also the cheapest. The disadvantage of buying such will be that if you placed this inside your kitchen there will be less possibility that you will achieve the detailed look for the place as plastic stuff look generally the same and not as stylish as it may seem.

The wooden kitchen stools however are considered to be the most versatile because it blends nicely on either modern looking house or the simple ones. This is more durable as well when compared to the plastic made.

The metal on the other hand is more of the contemporary designs but has superb durability and longevity. However, there are few complains saying that such stools are not comfortable to sit on. Whatever kitchen stools you would like to have the most important thing will always be on maintaining your place in clean and livable condition by means of putting up decorations like fresh flowers to make it more appealing.

Why Buy An Extending Dining Table

September 16th, 2010

Art comes in all forms. What usually comes in our mind when talking about art is just the stuff displayed in an art gallery to exhibit personal prowess that is molded by the hands or something that is demonstrated in front of an audience. What we don’t realize is that art is anywhere in everything. The table in our homes, for instance is one of the furniture that anything can be put in it, the dining table where busy individuals meet to share food and stories.

Why buy an extending dining table? For many reasons of course. A long dining table seems decorative with all its embellishment, that is, if it’s situated in a spacious elegant house. Nowadays, in an industrialized living, people increase in a fast rate before we know it. People migrate to urban areas believing that success is relative with its pace, where it becomes more crowded. Living facilities are now kept to minimum. If you are a minimalist person with a heart for art but you don’t want to compromise then this is a good choice. It comes from different shapes and sizes, as well as the material it is made of such as maple, oak, teak mahogany or you can even get a glass extending dining table.

On a daily basis the table would remain in its small pattern which takes less space. It gives versatility when guests drop by for a meal unexpectedly. A quick modification to the table turns an insufficient 4-seater into a spacious 8-seater table. It doubled the capacity. Of any kind, it has a solid base to give ample support for its expandability. Why purchase for many standard ones? It will just consume your house’s humble space. The worth outweighs its cost. Of good quality, longer lasting it is.

The answer for crampy room, takes minimal space, gets you prepared, fits your style and your needs in unanticipated events.

Usefully aesthetic.
