Get the Most out of Your Space and Wallet with Platform Beds

January 27th, 2012

One of the most frustrating aspects to modern living is the serious continuous lack of storage. It never seems to fail that no matter what you do in regards to staying organized, there just doesn’t seem to be enough room. One of the places that often comes to mind when you want to store something important is to put it under your bed. How many times have you gone to do this only to find that there is just barely not enough room? This is often true simply because the box spring is too bulky. If only there was another solution.

When it comes time to buy a brand new bed there are a whole lot of options out there and it is hard to know what the best one for you is.

There are beds that use box springs and mattresses, folding beds, bunk beds, and water beds. Although these are all great designs, you may be wanting something that is more suited to you and your home by using something like platform beds.

Platform beds are a system that is designed to have a wooden slat support or panels that are solid to create the foundation. Why is this important or different? Typically most beds utilize metal frames that will have three pieces which are thin and support all of the weight.

In order to adequately support an actual mattress you will need more then just these strips of metal and that is why you need to add in the box spring. The remarkable thing about platform beds is that they do not need to use this kind of bulky technology. Instead they use their unique slat or solid panels as a system that is created to give the best support possible. They do so well in fact that they still validate most warranty requirements of the most expensive part of your bed, the actual mattress.

The importance of using platform beds is that not only are they comfortable, but they are able to help bring your bed closer to the floor, and it is much less expensive then traditional beds. The typical box spring alone will often run anywhere from $200 to $500, and a good platform bed can cost you a total of that price.

One of the best aspects to using platform beds is the fact that they can free up the space that was typically occupied by the box spring. In opening this area up you are able to give yourself the freedom to use that lost space in any way you choose.

Remember that not only are platform beds comfortable and much more affordable then traditional beds, they can allow you to get more from your space then otherwise possible.

3 Outdoor Furniture Trends for Spring 2012

December 19th, 2011

With winter setting in, your outdoor living space probably isn’t getting much use. But instead of forgetting about it, use this time to plan for the future – spring will be here before you know it! The hallmark of a great outdoor room is great furniture, and that’s what we’re going to help you with today. Here are 3 outdoor furniture trends for 2012 to put you ahead of the curve.

Return of Wicker

Years ago, wicker weave was one of the most popular designs for patio furniture. More modern designs came along and replaced it, but it’s poised for a big comeback in 2012. Instead of wood, manufacturers are opting for lightweight resin, which gives it superior durability and makes maintenance minimal. They’re also going with a larger weave than that of years past, making the design stand out more.

Going Green

From shopping bags to appliances, it seems there’s a green version of everything these days. And that’s certainly the case with outdoor furniture, where items made from recycled materials will be having their breakout season next spring. Up to now, only a handful of manufactures have offered green products, but many are adding them to their lines for 2012. With these high grade plastic designs being able to withstand all sorts of weather conditions, they’re an investment you can feel good about putting on your patio.

Fire Pit Tables

Fire pits have been on the rise for a few years now, popping up everywhere from downtown night clubs to city parks. Like green items, we expect their popularity only to continue to climb next year. The designs of fire pit tables are becoming more decorative and functional, offering different shapes, materials, and extra features like center coverings to convert to a full table. While it may seem more like a fall/winter item, a fire is a great way to relax in the evening any time of year, and we expect seven more consumers to experience this for themselves this coming spring.

With winter here, it’s the perfect time to start planning the upgrades to your outdoor living space that you’ll make next spring. Keep these 3 trends in mind and you’ll create an outdoor room that everyone will fall in love with!

Clever Combining of Modern and Traditional Styles

May 21st, 2011

When it comes to interior design I can never decide if I prefer sleek modern looks or cosy traditional ones. It all depends on what day it is, what mood I’m in and what the room is like I suppose. In order to try and satisfy both sides I have made some attempts at combining the two in kitchen designs – and amazingly it works!

In a stark black and white kitchen which is all clean lines and glossy surfaces, why not add a touch of glamour with an opulent, traditional chandelier as a centre piece for the room. It will light the way, look fabulous above a table and make a wonderful talking point.

Alternatively you could switch round and have scrubbed pine kitchen worktops and a Belfast sink combined with the latest in glass cabinets. This will give a homely, comforting feel to what otherwise might appear clinical as well as being practical and hardwearing.

The combinations are endless: a farmhouse-style range cooker in amongst modern units, a classic wooden kitchen with the latest appliances and gadgets, and perhaps my favourite – the clean lines of a minimalist state-of-the-art kitchen softened by an ornate wallpaper harking back to times gone by, inspired by William Morris for example. Once you start considering the possibilities you can really let your imagination run free!

Elsewhere in the house you might combine traditional furniture with modern art pieces for an eclectic living area, or maybe even an old fashioned roll top bath nestled in the corner of a minimal loft apartment. Outside as well, some of the most impressive gardens combine a sense of wild abandon amongst the plants with some statement pieces of lawn furniture. And of course it’s a great way to make a feature out of a family heirloom or much-loved antique.

Don’t be afraid to give it a whirl – you will be delighted by the results!

Overcoming Fears as a San Antonio Home Buyer

May 20th, 2011

When people start investing in real estate, one of the most common problems is fear that prevents them from taking action. There concerns and questions are on a whole range of topics- most of which become non-issues in practice. Even when taught how to structure a deal so the risk is essentially zero, new investors still tend to freeze up.

One thing that generally helps get the ball rolling is education on passive income. Once people learn that a 9-5 job is often riskier than real estate, they start listening. With a 9-5 you can be fired at any moment. Failure to conform and advance another person’s agenda results in a demotion, or worse, a lay off. But when you’re your own boss there is so much security in knowing that your in control of your financial future. In a job, no matter how hard you work you’re capped. You get the same amount of pay until your next promotion. In real estate, hard work transfers directly into results. If you buy 10 houses instead of 1 in a month, you make 10 times as much. It’s freeing to know that your potential is limitless.

San Antonio home buyers emphasize going to real estate investing clubs to eliminate these common fears. The support of seasoned investors who have overcome those same concerns is invaluable. Here you can not only educate yourself on the value of passive income streams, but you can network with vendors and other investors who can aid in your success. The great thing about hanging out with other investors is that you can learn through their mistakes. Of course you’ll make your own, but you’ll make a lot less if you keep your ears open.

These clubs are also a great place to meet real estate investing partners. Sometimes it helps new investors, if they don’t have to go it alone. Having a partner or a mentor can get many of them past their first deal.

Concrete Driveway Sealers Installation

May 19th, 2011

When it comes to re-sealing the driveway in your home, you have to take a look at a lot of options before you can make a decision. Many people will attempt to use an epoxy floor sealer but this does not work very well because of the susceptibility of epoxy to degrade because of UV radiation. This means the rays of the sun from summer can cause the coating to easily peel up and come off. If you are searching for concrete driveway sealers then you will probably need to know about acrylics or polyurea based products. For light traffic and pedestrians, using acrylic based is fine but, if there is going to be significant amount of traffic, you should use the more expensive polyurea.

One thing that you should always remember when you apply any type of sealer is that the sealer will not properly function unless the surface where it is applied has been absolutely cleaned. Of course, this means that all dirt and grime should be removed but it is also goes beyond this level of cleaning. You should also make sure that you eliminate all oil stains and spots on your concrete. Petroleum contamination is the main cause of the failure of concrete sealers because it keeps the boundary moist such that the coating is unable to permeate to stick to the concrete molecules.

The best technique is to clean your driveway first with a pressure washer and blow away all dirt and road grime. Then, you can use a good degreaser and generously apply it onto the floor’s surface. As you use a stiff bristle floor broom you scrub the whole area and pay extra special attention to the areas where there are spots and stains. When the area is scrubbed using the degreaser, you should use the hose or power washer to wash away all the excess. Once the concrete is completely dry, you can begin applying the coating.

Green Tea With Envy

May 13th, 2011

Have you ever tried green tea? As someone who doesn’t like milk I have often sampled fruit teas and infusions but never really liked them, preferring instead to have a weak earl grey or something more like actual tea than bubble bath. Green tea caught on a few years ago and whilst it is perhaps not as trendy as it was then, it is still majoring on my shopping list.

Green tea was my new best friend when I was pregnant and trying to cut down on caffeine. It is also kind on the digestive system and I soon became hooked, entering friends kitchens with a supply in my handbag to save me from having a black coffee which whilst much enjoyed cannot boast the same health benefits. I like my green tea with lemon, but will happily go along with jasmine or whatever else is on offer – as long as it is not milk.

Reading more about green tea, the health concerns which may be positively affected by drinking it regularly include cancer, diabetes and obesity. Incredible really – and studies also remark on the general health of the Japanese nation, where green tea originates from, with potential links to long life expectancy and less prevalence of arthritis in older generations. Fascinating! And all this from stashing a little box of teabags in your kitchen units – and drinking the tea made from them of course.

My interest piqued I am now looking out for more ‘super foods’ to add to my diet in an effort to combat the negative effects of wine and chocolate, and my ever-so-slightly expanded waistline. The list seems to be pretty simple, fruit and vegetables with olive oil, fish, nuts and seeds featuring too. All in all I think my family is doing OK for vitamins, minerals and antioxidants – perhaps I just need to stop being so greedy! Easier said than done.

Packing Pains

May 13th, 2011

My house is currently a total bombsite as I try to pack the belongings of a small army into an average sized car for a holiday which I am now wishing I had never booked. I just keep repeating the mantra ‘it will all be OK when we get there’ and eyeing up the bottle of wine that calls to me whenever the fridge door opens. Sound familiar? I feel your pain.

What is it about husbands and children that they absolve themselves from all responsibility of remembering anything at all when you go away, but think it is perfectly alright to throw a full on tantrum if something of theirs has been left behind? I do not get this attitude at all, still, I continue to pack for everyone because the chances are that I am less likely to forget something than they are and the whole family will therefore feel less pain. However as a I survey the devastation on my kitchen worktops I am beginning to try and talk myself out of this logic and wonder if I should just grab the sauvignon blanc and leave them all to it.

Perhaps I have brought it on myself by being a control freak and years ago should have let my youngest wear winter coats to head off for Spain and my husband survive on two pairs of boxers for an entire week. I just can’t seem to help it! Other people’s kitchens are disorganised chaos all the time but mine is usually well ordered and complete with seriously geeky lists. Maybe that is why the current state of affairs is bothering me so much… I think I will just stick everything that I have amassed so far into the car and then see if there is any room left! At least the house will be tidy again. Roll on wine time!

Egged on by Easter

May 10th, 2011

After a hectic Easter weekend and many bank holidays in April the chocolate-fuelled school holiday madness and the arrival of a deputation of relatives is now almost a distant memory. Having just about recovered from bonnet-making and cake baking for PTA activities I am now turning my mind to the how we managed to feed and find somewhere to sleep everyone – I must be more prepared next year.

If you are in the same hell as I was, all family, friends and their children descending on you – I actually think it is worse than Christmas from an organisational point of view – then my heart goes out to you. All I can say is add a few nice bottles of wine to the supermarket trolley in order to soften the blow!

When every one of your sofa beds is full and your freezer overflows you know that you just have to batten down the hatches and ride the wave through to next term. At least the weather is more Spring-like and there is a lot of joy to be had from a traditional Easter egg hunt – it is not all bad really.

I always think there is safety in numbers, and from conversation with friends I realise that I am definitely not on my own. All that effort for the family at Easter is well worth it and very much appreciated and when the last of the food is eaten and the last of the visitors have gone we can all be proud of ourselves. We were all looking forward to falling into our double beds happy in the knowledge that everyone had a wonderful time and we had consumed a weeks worth of calories in about half a day. Time to hit the gym!
