It will probably come as a surprise to most people to learn that they have a yeast, Candida Albicans, living on their skin. This yeast is almost everywhere, and under ordinary circumstances will cause no trouble. However, sometimes the integrity of the skin is broken and it is then that a yeast infection can begin. While antibiotic or steroid use can contribute to these skin infections, they tend to occur under specific circumstances.
Most yeast infections found on the skin will occur in places where there is little circulation of air. Any spot that stays moist and warm can be a perfect spot for the Candida to overgrow. This type of yeast infection will often occur during the summer, in humid weather. These infections are most usually found in the armpits, groin, and in folds created by body fat. All these areas have a tendency to stay moist a good deal of the time, and this gives the yeast the opportunity to proliferate. The yeast infection will be a red, softened area that is itchy and somewhat painful. This kind of yeast infection is called intertrigo.
In order to help control intertrigo, it is a good idea to wear loose clothing, as this allows for air circulation. Weight loss can also help by doing away with the folds and wrinkles that are difficult to keep dry.
Yeast infection can also occur on the skin of infants and is associated with diaper rash. The infection will be an angry, red area, that often weeps. As, of necessity, infants must wear diapers and the area will be moist, it would probably help to keep the diapers changed as often as possible. Disposable diapers can be a big help, as long as they are not kept on too long. The diapers designated as long use types should be avoided. The longer the child is subjected to a wet diaper, the better the chance of a skin yeast infection beginning.
Candida yeast infections can also develop around the nails, especially the fingernails. Generally, another type of yeast, or fungus, will cause the infection around the toenails. Sometimes the nail will be discolored, and there is usually swelling and discharge.
Treating yeast infections of the skin can be accomplished in many cases by over-the-counter remedies. There are various creams and powders to treat these infections. Many others look to a holistic natural cure for yeast infection of the skin. Making sure the affected areas get plenty of air will help, too. If the infection does not clear up within two weeks, however, it would then be time to see a doctor for a stronger course of treatment.
