Pocket watches were once symbols of class. They helped tell poor people from the affluent. They were much like cars in the olden days. Seeing them enabled a lot of people to tell apart those that are opulent and those that have meager amounts of money only.
Ingersoll pocket watches were one of the most popular brands. These watches became very popular but then they were overshadowed by wristwatches and they lost their appeal. They slowly made a comeback in the 1970s as digital pocket watches.
Digital pocket watches display time in number instead of the old-fashioned pointing hands that you see in analog watches. There are two basic types of digital pocket watches, the mechanical and the electronic pocket watch.
The French watchmaker Blondeau created the first mechanical digital pocket watch for a French king in the 1830s. It measured the passage of time with the jump-hour movement. Mechanical digital pocket watches were them mass-produced through Cortebert, a Swiss watch making company. Just like other types of pocket watches, they quickly lost their appeal when wristwatches came out after the First World War.
The introduction of electronic movements in the 1970s revolutionized the watch industry and it also gave birth to electronic pocket watches. These watches are known to be more accurate and they possess other features which pocket watches of the old days did not have. Some of these features are calendars, altimeters and thermometers. These watches did more than just tell you the exact time.
Digital pocket watches of today are more than just watches. They serve other purposes too. They also come in various designs and styles. Some can be worn on chains and some can be clipped on the belt. They are fashioned from different materials. They are made for men, as well as for ladies. The pocket watch has surely come a very long way since the time its idea was conceived.
