A Pink Laptop Makes The Perfect Gift

August 20th, 2010

Buying a gift for someone you care about can quickly turn into a challenging ordeal. After all, the most important part of the selection process is choosing something that the recipient will actually use and appreciate. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how much you spend on an item if the end user doesn’t see value in it. The stakes can be particularly high when shopping for high ticket items like laptop computers, since you risk wasting your hard earned money on something that may or may not work for the person you are shopping for. If your goal is to purchase a pink laptop computer for someone you love, then it’s important to arm yourself with a specific set of shopping criteria to ensure that your gift is appreciated and provides value to the receiver.

Although prices for laptop computers are at their lowest level in years, it’s still quite common to pay between $500 and $1,000 for a decent pink laptop from one of the major computer manufacturers. Because of this, it’s important to select a computer that stays within your budget while providing a set of features that the recipient will find useful. Listed below are the criteria you should use when making your purchase –

•    Know What the User Wants – although your opinion about a particular product may be valuable on some level, what’s really important is what matters to the end user. You need to know what the user needs in order to provide them with a computer that aligns with exactly what they’re looking for. The great news is that most computers are more than capable of handling the tasks of the “average” computer user, which include email, word processing and most common software applications.

•    Set a Budget – unless you have an unlimited supply of money, you will want to set a budget prior to shopping for a new computer. Keep in mind that you may need to spend up to $1,000 on just the computer alone. You may also want to factor in additional expenses like a protective case or an external mouse.

•    Know the Return Policy – ideally, you want to shop through a retailer that offers a generous return policy. Because there’s a good chance that the recipient may not like the computer for some reason, it’s important that they are able to return or exchange it for something that better suits their needs.

Shopping for a new computer can be stressful, particularly when you’re tasked with buying a pink laptop for someone other than yourself. However, by adhering closely to the shopping criteria listed above you will ensure that your recipient will appreciate and cherish the gift you give them.

Is A Laptop Better Than A Desktop?

August 14th, 2010

It was not too long ago that everyone who had a computer had just a desktop home PC. Laptops were used by the elite, since they were so expensive. They were an unnecessary luxury to the common man. Even with the rise in popularity of laptops, most computer users regularly use a desktop, whether at work or at home. So, which one is better?

For people on the go, who need access to their computer all of the time, a laptop is the hands down winner. If portability is your priority, then there is no question about which is better. Desktops cannot be easily carried around. You will need a cart in order to get it around. There will be times that you need to cart your home PC around, like for repairs. Desktops will be a hassle to take to a computer repair place. However, you may end up paying more to get a laptop fixed.

That does not mean that a desktop is a useless, bulky, obsolete piece of technology, although it is bulky. In order to get a laptop with comparable memory and processing capabilities to your home PC, you could end up paying two to three times the cost. Or, you can sacrifice performance for price. Also, desktops computers are not as prone to disaster as laptops. They sit on your desk all day, where laptops go on all of the adventures you do. A fall in the right, or wrong, direction could mean an end to your laptop.

Which is better depends on your priority. If your needs are minimal, you can get a good laptops under $500, about the same price of a lower end desktop. This will allow you to have portability that is so popular with the young people today. Make sure to look at strong, durable laptop bags and this could work out just fine. But if portability is not a priority and you don’t see it becoming one, a home PC might be a better buy.

What You Need to Know About Headphone Adapters

August 3rd, 2010

There are many different types of headphone adapter available and it’s good to have an understanding of them before going out and buying equipment for your set up. Use this article as a quick start into the world of the headphone adapter to save yourself wasting money on items that may not be compatible with your system and get it right the first time!

Firstly when buying a headphone adapter for your headphones you will need to identify two things:

1 – what sort of jack your headphones come with.

2 – what sort of input your device is compatible with.

The most common type is a ’3.5mm jack’ which is used with almost every type of MP3 player and iPod on the market. Skullcandy stereo headphones are a very popular brand which use these connection. You’ll also find they can be used with other devices such as computers and mobile phones.

Other devices use a different type of input entirely and take what is called a 1/4″ jack. These are much wider and longer than the 3.5mm jack and are most commonly used with more ‘professional’ set ups such as for sound mixing and DJing.

Issues can come from these different connections with certain types of headphones not being compatible with other devices. This is where the headphone adapter comes in, allowing you greater freedom and flexibility with your set up. A variety of headphone adapters are available and can either come with your headphones or can be purchased seperately. The most common types are the 1/4″ jack to 3.5mm jack, the 3.5mm jack to the 1/4″ jack, splitter cables and double ended connectors to allow two of the same jack to be connected together.

Overall, when adding in less common connections (such as optical and A/V connections) things can become more complicated but this article should give you a good understanding of the basics.

The Technical 3D Scanner

August 3rd, 2010

A 3D scanner is an amazing piece of equipment that is capable of producing 3 dimensional digital images of an object. In short it can turn a physical model into a 3 dimensional digital picture. At present, the entertainment industry is perhaps the place where it is used the most. This allows the technicians to do more realistic special effects by taking pictures of objects that cannot be used in real life. This way it is possible to recreate it as many times it is needed for a scene. It is not only in the film industry, the video game industry also makes use of 3D scanners on a regular basis.

Other areas where this type of technology is used is in industrial design, prosthetic design, reverse engineering and for the preservation of historical artifacts. Valuable historical and archeological artifacts may need to be preserved and in doing so correct technical data such s the exact dimensions will be needed. When prosthetics are made exact measurements are needed to recreate the object. In reverse engineering a specific part may need to be faithfully recreated. For all of these actions 3d scanners can take precision engineering and manufacturing to new heights.

A 3D scanner is similar to a regular digital camera. The similarities are, they both will have cone shaped views and you can only take pictures of unobstructed objects. The difference between the 2 is that the finished product will obviously be different. 3D scanners take pictures by creating a set of points around the object being scanned or photographed. Afterwards these images are extrapolated by a process known as reconstruction.

There are several different types of 3D scanners. One scanner is called a coordinate measuring machine and it does the job by coming into physical contact with the object being scanned. Visual scanners on the other hand use light, X-ray and ultra sound to help create 3D image

Cell Phone Lookup

August 3rd, 2010

You may have wondered why someone would want the option for a cell phone lookup in order to find a name and an address or other information for the owner of the phone. It may seem like a strange thing to do, but many searches of this kind are done each day by people who may be looking for friends, relatives, co-workers or schoolmates. The search itself is quite easy to do, but what may make or break it is which cell phone lookup service you choose to use. Though, finding a good reverse cell phone lookup company is also not difficult.

If you have already attempted a reverse cell phone lookup in the past, then you most likely tried first to do a free search with the number. Many people try this option first. However, finding free results that are thorough and accurate is a very rare thing. It can happen, sure, but the odds are that you won’t find the right information, and if you do it will be very scant information. Learn from the experience of others, and move beyond the simple free search.

Wireless phone numbers and the information associated with them are controlled by the big wireless companies themselves, such as Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile. They didn’t always give out this information to just anyone. But, these companies have for several years now offered information for a price. Online information retrieval sites or information brokers can obtain the information from the wireless carriers, and the wireless companies offer up that information for a small fee to help cover costs and come out with a small profit.

The amount that is charged is quite small in comparison to the vast level of information you can get on a person if you just have their mobile phone number.  The top sites also let you take a look around for free before you must pay the fee for the final results. And a 60-day money-back guarantee is also attached to results from most companies.

Many of these online directories now also have more extensive information, such as civil and criminal background check information. With all of this information available to everyone, it may be time to start thinking carefully about who you are giving your mobile phone number to in the future, and keep it private if you can.

Are There Any Cool Kindle Covers?

August 2nd, 2010

Read any tech or gadget review sites and you could be forgiven for thinking that the only piece of personal electronics anyone cares about today is the iPad.  Owners of the Apple Tablet are being swamped with new luxury, low-cost and über-cool iPad cases everyday.  But what about the lowly Kindle?  They are still exceedingly popular and all need a little protection.  So are there actually any cool Kindle Covers available?

Well there are, but you really do have to search for them.  There are some great leather Kindle covers in traditional designs but if you want something a little more modern you might be disappointed at first glance.  However, keep searching and ignore the best sellers and there really are some more unusual designs available that won’t cost an arm and a leg.

My personal favorite amongst the funky Kindle Covers are those from JAVOedge.  Their Cherry Blossom fabric cases inspired by Japanese prints are particularly beautiful, but still young and most importantly fun.  If you prefer your Kindle to be protected by leather have a look at their “croc” leather cases.  Bright red or baby pink are particularly good fun, or if you are feeling rather more mysterious midnight purple should liven things up for you.

Just because tablet owners are getting all the press, does not mean Kindle owners are being neglected.  You might have to route around a bit to uncover any of the more unusual or exciting designs but there is absolutely no reason to order a boring cover for your Kindle cover.

If money is no object and you like high quality traditional styling you could always choose a high end leather case from Spanish company Piel Frama.  Their products might be traditional in terms of detailing and design but when you check out the vivid colors they use you can see they too can add a little funk to the humble eBook Reader!

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS7 Review

August 1st, 2010

Panasonic are very well known for making quality digital cameras, one of there newer models called Lumix DMC ZS7 is no exception to that rule.

With optical zooms on digital cameras increasing seemingly every month it is no surprise that the DMC ZS7 boasts a large 12x optical zoom.

The DMC ZS7 features a Venus Engine HD II processor with face detection technology and the capability of capturing video. With a built in GPS receiver and stereo sound it really has many more features than a normal digital camera . The LCD monitor is 3 inches and the digital lens which is an extremely high quality Leica DC Vario Elmar lens is 25mm equivalent to 35mm film.

The picture quality of the DMC ZS7 is amazing which is partly due to the Leica lens which is a top performer when is comes to lenses for cameras. The built in memory of the ZS7 is 15mb and it supports SD, SDHC and the new ultra high capacity SDXC memory card. The battery life of the camera lasts for approximately 300 shots. You should be aware that the GPS checks its position every 15 minutes and if left on this can drain the battery at a higher rate than just taking pictures.

More experienced photographers will appreciate the Happy Mode option which adds a vivid color filter to all the photos and video.

The menus inside the DMC ZS7 are very easy to navigate and there is a quick menu option for making common menu changes like image size and ISO. The start up of the camera is quite quick as it only takes a few seconds from turning it on to be ready for taking pictures.

Overall a highly recommended camera from the digital camera giants Panasonic. Many positive reviews so far on this product have made it one of the best selling cameras so far in 2010!
