To keep your chinchilla healthy and happy, you need to give him or her a dust bath. This is not only good for them, but it also makes them look great and incredibly soft. When chinchillas are handled frequently, and doing their general day to day thing, their fur may become greasy and oily requiring chinchilla dust baths to put things right.
You can purchase a chinchilla bath house from a pet store or use the inexpensive method. The cheaper method is to find an old bowl that’s fairly large. Place a half inch of chinchilla dust, purchased from a pet store, into the bowl and place it into his cage and secure the latch on the door. Chinchillas will naturally take to a dust bath and jump right in on their own.
Let him play and spin in the bowl for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Remove the dusting bowl from the cage and discard the dust contents when he‘s done. It’s best to discard the dust in case its been fouled and not reuse it for another bath. Some people believe chinchillas should have a bath daily and others say weekly. You can use these guidelines or learn when his fur begins to appear greasy and unkempt. Then it’s definitely time for a little bath. They love to bath and play in the dust, so it’s a healthy activity to keep them happy. Cages for chinchillas should not contain a permanent dust bath unless it has a lid you can close. Chins will dry themselves out if they are allowed limitless access.
Chinchillas do not require bathing with water and should not be given a water bath. This can create problems for the health of a pet and should be avoided. For those that are allergic to dust, you can substitute chinchilla sand in place of dust. It does not remove as much of the oils from their fur as dust does, but it may not be as problematic for people that are allergic to dust.
