One of the best ways to add summer fun is by purchasing your own ice cream machine. The machine allows you to use some of your favorite summer fruits to make tasty ice cream, sherbet, sorbets and other frozen treats. You will find that it is easy to use and allows you to control exactly what goes into the favorite treats of the family.
In order to freeze your summer treat, you will need to have plenty of ice and rock salt on hand. The rock salt lowers the freezing temperature of ice so that it can cool the milk mixture inside the canister to make your great ice cream. You will also find small machines designed to work inside the freezer of your refrigerator.
The basic ingredients for ice cream are milk, cream, sugar and vanilla. If you plan to add eggs to the mixture, then you should use one of the pasteurized egg substitutes available in the refrigerated section of your favorite grocery store by the eggs to prevent problems with salmonella. Fresh or canned fruits can be added or you may just want to make plain vanilla and have plenty of toppings available.
If you want to make your own ice cream with less fuss, a restaurant supply may carry soft serve ice cream mix. Just dump a half-gallon into the canister and add your favorite fruit, freeze and serve. Unless you tell, everyone will think you took the time to do everything yourself.
Persons who are lactose intolerant can substitute their favorite nondairy product for the milk and cream. Lower fat ice cream may be made using skim milk and no cream. Aspartame can be substituted for sugar to make a sugar free desert. If you have no dietary restrictions, you may want to use whole milk and add whipping cream for a rich and thick product.
